If you have ever seen copies of MAD Magazine from its early years, you may have wondered what an "axolotl" is. It's an unusual-looking salamander that lives only in Mexico (and in some research labs).
According to a recent AP article, the axolotl is currently in danger of extinction in the wild because of habitat loss and water pollution.
Unlike most amphibians, the axolotl reaches reproductive maturity without metamorphosing, so that it lives its entire life in the water. The six frilled appendages around the axolotl's head are gills.
Mudkips Pokemon/Internet Meme The real-life axolotl, or a creature similar to it, may be the source of the idea for the [in]famous "Mudkips" Pokemon character and Internet meme:
I'm doing a powerpoint on Axolotls and the very last slide is going to be of Axolotl fanart. Do you mind if I use this? I will put your username under your art.
My main interest with making this stamp was to help educate people about wildlife, and I'm glad you found it!
Unfortunately... too much of the axolotl's habitat in the wild has been destroyed. The local people in Mexico considered them a delicacy back in the day, which didn't help either. I don't want to see them going extinct!
I have a pet axolotl, her name is Happy
I always wanted one of those!!!
